Right before Christmas, The Henry’s took a trip to Grass Valley in Northern California and stayed at the Triangle Ranch, but the drive up was not exactly easy. Hours of driving filled with frequent bathroom break stops and “Are we there yet?”s started to feel very laborious for Glen. As he drove, he knew he was supposed to enjoy these quality time moments with his family, but it felt like the dumbest idea they’d ever had. While he was focused on simply getting there and Yvette peered out the window in awe of each new thing she saw, Glen was reminded that there’s value in their balance of the journey and the destination.
The Hike to Remember
A few days into their trip, they went out for a hike. Theo wanted to bring his skates to the trail which was filled with dirt, rocks, mud, and ice, and was very upset when Glen said he couldn’t. The kids all complained on the way there. Uriah was not interested in going at all, and was so irritated when they arrived that he threw sticks at handicapped signs. It was hard.
Getting away and spending time with family is so important, even when it’s inconvenient. In fact, the difficulties sometimes turn into the highlights. Once on the hike itself, the kids started chasing each other and playing, becoming one of the best moments from their trip, but you wouldn’t think that from how it started! Sometimes the best things in life require a lot of labor.
Yvette is a deep believer in exposing her kids to experiences they never knew they needed – the outdoors being a big one. She notices that even when they complain at first, once they’re out, they enjoy that time so much that they forget why they didn’t want to in the first place. The push to do new things is something she knows will be helpful in their futures. Looking back, though the start was laborious, this trip brought fun memories like cooking in the kitchen, waking up to deer, finishing an 1,000 piece puzzle, watching Christmas movies, seeing Theo and Uriah reading together in bed, Uzi cuddles, the kids learning to play checkers, playing basketball with the boys, and so much more.
Sitting at her Parents’ Feet
Another reflection Glen had involved Anaya. On the way up and the way home, she was wide awake. “Mom, are you awake?”, “Can we listen to Big Time Rush? Can we listen to Cinderella?”, and “Mom?” filled their ears for hours, and it started to get frustrating. But he noticed that there’s something to the way she always wants to be in her parents’ presence. She’ll sit at their feet and simply listen just to hear their voice, and that’s so special.
So what does it mean to travel with your family? Practice patience and enjoy the ride! Each turn on the wheel is a success. Encourage yourself in the small steps and know that even in the hard, there are so many seeds being planted in your family.
Your Challenge!
When you’re on the journey, look for the small messages in your life. Think about what you can learn from each moment and reflect on those revelations. You never know how much they can change your perspective!
