Glen & Yvette have been sharing encouragement to people of different seasons on their email lists including singles. But when they’ve been sent out, they sometimes get responses they weren’t expecting, which have begged the question: Should married people give advice to singles and does their advice bring value to their season?
To answer those, they brought on Anthony O’Neal, fellow podcast host, single man, and Yvette’s older brother to share his insight!
Should Married People Speak into Singles’ Lives
From Anthony’s perspective, you wouldn’t tell a millionaire that they couldn’t give advice on how to get out of debt and become financially well, so the same should apply for marriage. Married couples can help singles get into the marriage they so desire by sharing their experiences and advice. He doesn’t listen to single relationship efforts because he doesn’t think they can give advice on something that they haven’t practiced and learned from.
Married people should be teaching how singles can become better individuals so that they can become better spouses when the time is right. What are things he/she can work on now that will benefit them later? What are some things that singles should be prepared for?
Hesitations in Singleness
One of Anthony’s greatest hesitations in relationships is whether or not he can trust the woman he’s with to receive and protect his vulnerability and authenticity. He feels they aren’t always ready to be that safe space, and a nourishing, loving woman.
In Glen’s experience, sometimes coming home from work feels like walking into another four hour shift. He’s needed to be a buffer between mom and kids, a help, and a relief, and that can be hard. Glen has learned that although he may sometimes desire to come home and simply relax and rest, that he needs to be a safe space to land for Yvette too. His place is sometimes in transition. He feels men need breath work, therapy, early morning routines, and intentional breaks. Marriage is about both partners embodying peace for one another.
Yvette encourages Anthony that while he is concerned about choosing the “right” girl, that in marriage, you will continue to work on it throughout your life. The same way he took a leap of faith and started his own business and worked at it until he became successful, the same applies in marriage. Choose well in your partner, then continue working together. Even if the choice isn’t perfect, you can be so committed to the choice that it will flourish in the end because you both are willing to put in the work.
Sharing Real Marriage is Crucial
Anthony looks forward to the journey knowing it will grow him and change him in new ways, and he hopes G&Y continue sharing with singles. The older generations didn’t paint the best pictures because they weren’t willing to lay it all out, so sharing what real marriage is about is crucial. We need more real marriages willing to share the good, the bad, and the deep!
Thank you for listening and reading the show notes for this week’s episode!
