Sometimes people do not understand why Glen & Yvette share so much of their lives: parenting, marriage, individual life, etc. So in today’s episode, they wanted to share exactly why they put so much out there.
When the podcast first started, Yvette was craving quality time and conversation with Glen. She wanted devoted time to talk about their marriage and life at large. They had wanted to start a book club, but that never happened, so they simply got in front of the microphone and talked. It slowly became dedicated conversation for the two of them, and the listeners benefit from getting that deep insight.
Glen was on a call with Dr. Perry and he wondered why Glen shares what he does. That partnered with some listener emails inspired them to share exactly why they do what they do.
Sharing a Realistic Perspective
In the black community, there isn’t a lot of people showing up and sharing. That silence in and of itself speaks volumes. They hope to share to be proof to others that they are not the only ones trying to figure it out. Yvette remembers a scene from Shotgun Wedding where the son talks about his parents’ perfect marriage only for her to correct him and tell him all the hardships they went through and worked through. His perception of what his own parents’ marriage was wasn’t what he thought, and that exact scenario is why Glen & Yvette share. Marriage is walking through a lot of life, a lot of fun, and a lot of hard, and doing it together.
The hope is that they will shed light into the topic of marriage so that people know exactly what they are walking into with healthy, realistic perspective.
It Comes at a Cost
As much as their “why” reminds them, sometimes sharing the way they do comes at a cost. It means not-so-nice comments on videos, upset emails, and rude DMs. It means people feeling entitled to pieces of their lives and strangers they’ve never met feeling like they’re best friends. It’s uncomfortable and hard, but their “why” is what continues to drive them.
You may not agree with what they are doing, but there is something powerful about sharing real life.
The Hope
The laughs, the love, the joy, the excitement. Marriage can yield some incredible moments, but also know that marriage makes you the most vulnerable you have ever been. Glen & Yvette created How Married Are You to be the rawest proof of a strong marriage. Their hope is that through this look into their marriage, it would bring you healing and knowledge of what true worth looks like in a relationship.
Story is king. It all begins with a story, even when it comes to The Lord! Don’t be afraid of your testimony (whether it’s online or in your community), even when you’re in the middle of it. It allows others to walk alongside you and benefits you both.
Thank you for listening and reading the show notes for this week’s episode!
